Common questions

Questions & answers.

The things people most often ask before and after they order. Can't find yours? The workshop is an email away.

Ordering & lead times

Are your pieces made to order or kept in stock?

Both. Some pieces are finished and ready to ship; others are made to order, one at a time. Each product page tells you which, so you always know before you buy.

How long until my order arrives?

In-stock pieces leave the workshop within 2 working days. Made-to-order pieces are typically 3–4 weeks, because each is made by hand — the exact lead time is shown on the product page.

Can I order a custom size, an engraving, or a commission?

Yes — we take on bespoke sizes, engraving, and commissions. Tell us what you have in mind on our trade & commissions page, or email the studio directly.

Materials & finish

What wood are your pieces made from?

British-supplied hardwoods — oak, walnut, ash, cherry, maple, and more. Every piece names its wood, and you can browse by timber in the shop.

Why does my piece look different from the photo?

Because it's solid wood, not print. Colour, grain, and figure vary from board to board — no two pieces are quite alike. The photographs show the character to expect, not an exact copy.

Is the finish food-safe?

Yes. Pieces are finished with food-safe oil (and, where suited, a food-safe wax) — safe for direct contact with food. See the care guide for keeping it that way.

What's in the finish, and what about allergies?

Boards are finished with food-safe oil and wax (Walrus Oil Cutting Board Oil & Wood Wax), which may contain mineral oil, beeswax, fractionated coconut oil and vitamin E. We don't use walnut, peanut or sesame oil. The pieces themselves are natural hardwoods (walnut, maple, cherry, beech and others) — so if you have a severe allergy to a wood species, coconut-derived ingredients, or beeswax, get in touch before ordering. Full details are in our care guide.

Caring for your piece

How do I look after it?

Hand-wash, dry it promptly, and re-oil now and then. The full routine — including reviving a tired piece — is in our care guide.

Can it go in the dishwasher?

No — hand-wash only. A dishwasher's heat and standing water will dry the wood out and can crack it. A quick wash by hand keeps a piece going for decades.

Shipping & delivery

Where do you ship?

Great Britain and Northern Ireland. We don't ship internationally at the moment.

How much is shipping, and how is it sent?

Shipping is calculated at checkout from your address. Each piece is wrapped and sent in recycled-card packaging, with a card naming the wood and the week it was finished.

When will my order be dispatched?

In-stock pieces within 2 working days; made-to-order pieces once they're finished (typically 3–4 weeks). You'll get a note when yours is on its way.

Returns & guarantee

Can I return something?

Yes — you have 14 days from receiving a standard piece to change your mind. Full details, including faulty goods, are on our shipping & returns page.

Is there a guarantee?

Every piece carries a 12-month workmanship guarantee. Beyond that, because pieces are oil-finished they're built to be repaired — many marks simply re-oil away, and boards can be re-planed.

What if it arrives damaged?

Let us know promptly and we'll put it right. If a piece arrives faulty, damaged, or not as described, we cover return postage — just email us first.

Gifts & payment

Can I send a piece as a gift?

Of course. Add a gift note at checkout and we'll include it — no prices go in the box.

Do you sell gift cards?

Not yet — it's on our list. In the meantime, do get in touchif you'd like to arrange something for a gift.

How do I pay, and is checkout secure?

Payment is by card or PayPal through our secured checkout (Snipcart). We never see or store your card details. Payments go through PayPal under the name Fast Forex (Timbermere Studio) — so if you see “Fast Forex” on your statement, that's us.
