Why these boards?
Every board in the shop can be engraved; this is Ewald's shortlist of the pieces that carry words especially well. Each gives the lettering breathing room, with faces or edges that hold a clean, legible burn. Paler, tighter grains bring stronger contrast. Serving boards preserve fine details because knives visit them less often. End-grain choices are here too: slow to build and rarely paired with personalisation elsewhere, they make an especially distinctive gift.

How personalisation works
Find your board. Choose edge grain or end grain in the hardwood, size and shape that suit the way it will be used. Every option is handmade in the North Yorkshire workshop.

Approve the details. Ewald burns your wording, treats the finished board with food-safe oil and wax, and dispatches it on its usual schedule. Add a handwritten gift note if you wish; there is never a price in the box.
Common questions
Is laser engraving food safe on a chopping board?
Yes. Laser engraving chars the timber itself; it does not add ink, paint or a surface film that can wear into food. Ewald keeps personalisation away from the main cutting area to reduce wear, then treats the entire board with the usual food-safe oil and wax. The placement protects the lettering; it is not a workaround for a safety concern.
Will the engraving wash off or fade?
No. Because laser engraving changes the surface fibres of the wood, it cannot rinse away like a print. Lettering on the edge, border or back should last for the life of the board. Repeated cuts can gradually soften any mark on a working face, so the words go where the knife isn't.
Which wood shows engraving best?
Maple, beech and ash usually create the strongest contrast, with a dark burn against pale, close grain. Oak gives lettering natural texture, while cherry's growing warmth changes the surrounding tone over time. Walnut reads quietest, almost a secret. How long does a personalised board take?
Personalising adds nothing to the dispatch time. A board already in stock keeps its normal dispatch window after engraving, while a made-to-order design keeps its published lead time. Dispatch is when it leaves the North Yorkshire workshop, not when a carrier delivers it, so use Timbermere's stated seasonal order deadlines when timing a gift.
Can I give a personalised board as a wedding or anniversary gift?
