Luxury is a loose word in kitchenware, so here is what it means at this bench. Solid hardwood rather than veneer or laminate. Every board cut, planed and oiled by Ewald himself, in a workshop outside Selby, North Yorkshire. Timber bought through a British merchant and worked one piece at a time, so no two boards carry the same grain. And a board substantial enough that, years from now, it can come back to the same bench to be flattened and refinished rather than replaced.
There is no official definition, so it is worth judging on things you can check. Solid hardwood rather than veneer or laminate. Enough thickness that the board can be resurfaced rather than thrown away. Joints that hold. And a maker you can name. Every board here is built by hand by Ewald in one North Yorkshire workshop, and each product page lists its timbers, its size and its finish.
Yes. Each one is worked from a particular run of timber, so grain, figure and colour vary from piece to piece — a board is never an exact copy of the photograph. Sizes are given on every product page, because the pieces are worked to the wood rather than to a mould.
Yes — a wooden board is one of the few kitchen objects that can be brought back rather than replaced. Sent in to the workshop, it is flattened, resurfaced, re-edged, deep-cleaned and re-finished in food-safe oil and wax. That is our Refresh Service, and it applies to boards the workshop did not make too.
