About this piece

The Asterley is a pale end-grain board with dark walnut details set into the face like a quiet woven rhythm. It feels lighter and brighter than the oak-and-walnut checkerboards, but still has enough contrast to make the construction readable.

The 3.7 cm profile and 2.35 kg weight give it a stable working feel. A juice groove, softened edges, recessed grips and rubber feet make it practical for daily prep, while the end-grain face is gentle under the knife and well suited to vegetables, bread and serving.

The timbers
Canadian Maple
Acer saccharum · Canada

Pale, clean, and hard-wearing - the quiet standard for serious chopping boards.

A pale, creamy hardwood with a fine, even grain and a clean, understated character. Canadian Maple is hard, dense, and reliable, making it one of the classic choices for chopping boards, butcher blocks, and kitchen surfaces that see real daily use. Its light colour gives a crisp, modern feel, while the smooth grain keeps the focus on the shape and finish of the piece.

Black Walnut
Juglans nigra · North America

A dark, temperamental timber - quiet under oil, dramatic under light.

A deep chocolate-brown hardwood that develops warmer, sometimes violet undertones when oiled. Black Walnut is slightly softer than oak, with a richer, more expressive grain that makes it especially suited to serving boards, bowls, and pieces meant to be looked at as well as used. Durable enough for regular use, but prized just as much for its depth, contrast, and the way it ages beautifully.

Care instructions

Wash by hand with mild soap and warm water. Towel dry straight away and stand the board on edge until fully dry.

Do not soak, dishwash, or leave beside direct heat. Re-oil when the surface starts to look dry; for regular use, every 4-8 weeks is a sensible rhythm.
