About this piece
The Bedale is a broad edge-grain board in European beech, Canadian maple and Black Walnut. Long timber sections make a calm working face, with a pale maple band and dark walnut rails giving the 43 x 31 cm surface a clear frame. At 4 cm thick, it is built for daily prep, carving and taking bread or cheese to the table.
An angular groove follows the perimeter, turning neatly through clipped corners to contain juices and crumbs. At 3.5 kg, the board stays settled on the worktop while remaining manageable to lift. The edge-grain construction balances durability with straightforward handling, while the contrast between the honey-toned face and walnut ends gives it presence without making it fussy.
The timbers
Quiet, pale, and practical - the dependable workhorse of European hardwoods.
A pale, creamy hardwood with a fine, even grain and a calm, understated character. European Beech is harder than cherry and walnut, making it a dependable choice for everyday boards, kitchen tools, and functional pieces that need to stand up to regular use. Its subtle colour and smooth surface let the form of the piece do the talking. Simple, honest, and quietly durable.
A dark, temperamental timber - quiet under oil, dramatic under light.
A deep chocolate-brown hardwood that develops warmer, sometimes violet undertones when oiled. Black Walnut is slightly softer than oak, with a richer, more expressive grain that makes it a striking choice for a chopping board meant to be looked at as well as used. Durable enough for regular use, but prized just as much for its depth, contrast, and the way it ages beautifully.
Pale, clean, and hard-wearing - the quiet standard for serious chopping boards.
A pale, creamy hardwood with a fine, even grain and a clean, understated character. Canadian Maple is hard, dense, and reliable, making it one of the classic choices for chopping boards, butcher blocks, and kitchen surfaces that see real daily use. Its light colour gives a crisp, modern feel, while the smooth grain keeps the focus on the shape and finish of the piece.
Care instructions
Wash by hand with mild soap, then towel dry and stand on an edge until fully dry. Do not soak or place in a dishwasher. Re-oil with a food-safe board oil when the surface looks dry.
