About this piece
The Naburn is a compact round board made for smaller servings of cheese, fruit, olives and a few well-chosen bites. Laminated from Canadian maple, purpleheart and American black walnut, its broad pale field and contrasting bands make the timber composition part of the presentation without needing extra decoration.
At 16.5 cm across and 2.5 cm thick, it has a reassuringly solid feel while remaining easy to carry between kitchen and table. The edge is smoothly rounded and the face is left uninterrupted, without a juice groove, handles or feet. A food-safe oil finish keeps the grain tactile and easy to renew.
The timbers
Pale, clean, and hard-wearing - the quiet standard for serious chopping boards.
A pale, creamy hardwood with a fine, even grain and a clean, understated character. Canadian Maple is hard, dense, and reliable, making it one of the classic choices for chopping boards, butcher blocks, and kitchen surfaces that see real daily use. Its light colour gives a crisp, modern feel, while the smooth grain keeps the focus on the shape and finish of the piece.
Starts brown, turns violet, and refuses to be background.
A dense, striking hardwood known for its natural purple colour, which can shift from brownish tones when freshly worked to a richer violet-purple as it oxidises and settles. Purpleheart is much harder than oak, walnut, cherry, and maple, giving it excellent durability but a more demanding working character. Best used where contrast, detail, and visual impact matter, especially as an accent timber in chopping boards, decorative strips, and statement pieces.
A dark, temperamental timber - quiet under oil, dramatic under light.
A deep chocolate-brown hardwood that develops warmer, sometimes violet undertones when oiled. Black Walnut is slightly softer than oak, with a richer, more expressive grain that makes it a striking choice for a chopping board meant to be looked at as well as used. Durable enough for regular use, but prized just as much for its depth, contrast, and the way it ages beautifully.
Care instructions
Wash by hand with mild soap and dry promptly. Do not soak or place in a dishwasher. Re-oil sparingly with a food-safe board oil when the surface begins to look dry.
