About this piece

The Escrick is a substantial serving board built from American cherry, Canadian maple, purpleheart and American tulipwood. Long, balanced bands give each timber room to show its natural colour, creating a composed surface for cheese, charcuterie, bread, olives, fruit and smaller shared dishes.

At 30 x 21.5 cm and 3 cm thick, it has enough weight to sit securely at the centre of the table without becoming awkward to carry. The face is uninterrupted by a juice groove, handles or feet, and the corners and edges are smoothly rounded before the board is finished with food-safe oil.

The timbers
American Cherry
Prunus serotina · North America

Soft pinks, honey warmth, and a colour that only gets better with age.

A warm, reddish hardwood with a calm, refined grain that glows beautifully once oiled. American Cherry begins with soft pink, honey, and light brown tones, then gradually darkens into a richer amber-red patina with use and exposure to light. Softer than oak and maple, it makes a warm, characterful chopping board — as much about grain and warmth as everyday function. Ages gracefully.

Canadian Maple
Acer saccharum · Canada

Pale, clean, and hard-wearing - the quiet standard for serious chopping boards.

A pale, creamy hardwood with a fine, even grain and a clean, understated character. Canadian Maple is hard, dense, and reliable, making it one of the classic choices for chopping boards, butcher blocks, and kitchen surfaces that see real daily use. Its light colour gives a crisp, modern feel, while the smooth grain keeps the focus on the shape and finish of the piece.

Purpleheart
Peltogyne spp. · South America

Starts brown, turns violet, and refuses to be background.

A dense, striking hardwood known for its natural purple colour, which can shift from brownish tones when freshly worked to a richer violet-purple as it oxidises and settles. Purpleheart is much harder than oak, walnut, cherry, and maple, giving it excellent durability but a more demanding working character. Best used where contrast, detail, and visual impact matter, especially as an accent timber in chopping boards, decorative strips, and statement pieces.

American Tulipwood
Liriodendron tulipifera · Eastern North America

Pale yellow-green hardwood with a calm, even grain and occasional darker mineral colour.

American tulipwood, also called yellow poplar, is a light North American hardwood with a generally straight, uniform grain. Its pale cream-to-yellow-green colour makes a quiet contrast beside darker woods and stronger accent timbers.

Care instructions

Wash by hand with mild soap, dry promptly and allow air to circulate around the board. Do not soak or place in a dishwasher. Re-oil with a food-safe board oil when the surface begins to look dry.
