About this piece

The Cawood is a set of six solid hardwood coasters built from Canadian maple, black walnut and American cherry. Broad contrasting bands make the timber composition easy to read, while the square 9 cm format gives mugs, tumblers and wine glasses a generous, settled base.

Each coaster is 1 cm thick, with softened corners and a smooth oiled surface that keeps the grain tactile. The six pieces stack neatly when not in use and have enough visual rhythm to remain part of the table rather than something to hide away between drinks.

The timbers
Canadian Maple
Acer saccharum · Canada

Pale, clean, and hard-wearing - the quiet standard for serious chopping boards.

A pale, creamy hardwood with a fine, even grain and a clean, understated character. Canadian Maple is hard, dense, and reliable, making it one of the classic choices for chopping boards, butcher blocks, and kitchen surfaces that see real daily use. Its light colour gives a crisp, modern feel, while the smooth grain keeps the focus on the shape and finish of the piece.

Black Walnut
Juglans nigra · North America

A dark, temperamental timber - quiet under oil, dramatic under light.

A deep chocolate-brown hardwood that develops warmer, sometimes violet undertones when oiled. Black Walnut is slightly softer than oak, with a richer, more expressive grain that makes it a striking choice for a chopping board meant to be looked at as well as used. Durable enough for regular use, but prized just as much for its depth, contrast, and the way it ages beautifully.

American Cherry
Prunus serotina · North America

Soft pinks, honey warmth, and a colour that only gets better with age.

A warm, reddish hardwood with a calm, refined grain that glows beautifully once oiled. American Cherry begins with soft pink, honey, and light brown tones, then gradually darkens into a richer amber-red patina with use and exposure to light. Softer than oak and maple, it makes a warm, characterful chopping board — as much about grain and warmth as everyday function. Ages gracefully.

Care instructions

Wipe clean with a soft damp cloth and dry promptly. Do not soak or place in a dishwasher. Re-oil sparingly with a food-safe wood oil when the surface begins to look dry.
