About this piece

The Rievaulx is a broad edge-grain board in European oak, marked by two Black Walnut bands running the length of its face. The clipped corners and strong linear grain give it an architectural shape, while 47 x 34 cm offers generous room for batch prep, carving, or a shared serving spread.

At 3.5 cm thick and 3.7 kg, it stays settled without becoming cumbersome to lift. A perimeter groove controls juices and crumbs, a recessed handhold helps at the counter, and silicone feet keep the board stable while leaving airflow beneath. The walnut lines give the large oak surface a clear visual rhythm without compromising its calm working character.

The timbers
European Oak
Quercus robur · Germany

Pale gold, open-grained, and built for work - the classic European bench timber.

A pale honey-gold hardwood that deepens beautifully with age and oil. European Oak is strong, open-grained, and famously durable, long used in furniture, joinery, beams, and hard-working surfaces across Europe. Best for chopping boards and pieces that need to feel solid, practical, and made for real everyday use.

Black Walnut
Juglans nigra · North America

A dark, temperamental timber - quiet under oil, dramatic under light.

A deep chocolate-brown hardwood that develops warmer, sometimes violet undertones when oiled. Black Walnut is slightly softer than oak, with a richer, more expressive grain that makes it a striking choice for a chopping board meant to be looked at as well as used. Durable enough for regular use, but prized just as much for its depth, contrast, and the way it ages beautifully.

Care instructions

Wash by hand with mild soap, then towel dry and allow to dry fully with airflow around the board. Do not soak or place in a dishwasher. Re-oil with a food-safe board oil when the surface looks dry.
