About this piece

The Yorkshire is a true butcher's block: a 9 cm-deep, 8 kg end-grain working surface built from alternating cherry and sycamore blocks. The close checker field presents the fibres vertically, giving knives a forgiving surface and the block enough mass to stay planted through chopping, portioning and carving.

At 39.5 × 37.5 cm it offers a generous near-square workspace without becoming a piece of furniture. Two metal side handles make the weight manageable, while softened edges and a food-safe satin oil-and-wax finish keep the form calm against the strong timber contrast.

The timbers
American Cherry
Prunus serotina · North America

Soft pinks, honey warmth, and a colour that only gets better with age.

A warm, reddish hardwood with a calm, refined grain that glows beautifully once oiled. American Cherry begins with soft pink, honey, and light brown tones, then gradually darkens into a richer amber-red patina with use and exposure to light. Softer than oak and maple, it makes a warm, characterful chopping board — as much about grain and warmth as everyday function. Ages gracefully.

European Sycamore
Acer pseudoplatanus · Europe

Pale, clean and close-grained — the traditional timber of dairy and kitchen ware.

European sycamore is a pale, creamy-white hardwood with a fine, close grain and a smooth, lustrous surface; some boards carry a soft ripple figure that shimmers as the light moves. Once oiled it warms to a gentle cream. Close-grained and free of taste or smell, it has long been a traditional timber for dairy and kitchen ware — a quiet, bright choice for a hard-working block.

Care instructions

Wash the working face by hand with mild soap; do not soak or place in a dishwasher. Dry promptly with air circulating around every face. Refresh with food-safe board oil and wax when the surface looks dry. Use both handles when moving the 8 kg block.
